Society Garlic

Society Garlic  (Tulbaghia)

Society Garlic (Tulbaghia) looks a bit like African Lily, but is much smaller. They flower a long time but are not fully hardy with us. Plant Society Garlic in a pot on the patio and enjoy the flowers for a long time. Give them a place in the full sun and enough water. In winter bring Society Garlic inside and keep them drier. As under planting in the pot you could use Cushion Bolax (Azorella) or Brassbuttons (Leptinella) as a nice contrast to the leaf shape. When bruising the leaves of Society Garlic, you smell the typical garlic scent. All parts of the plant are edible and are good in salads of cream cheese. Society Garlic is not yet well known which is a shame and most definitely worth a try.
