Sweetgrass

Sweetgrass  (Hierochloe)

Sweetgrass (Hierochloe) is a grass that can be found here and there in the wild. The plant forms rhizomes from which new plants will grow. Sweetgrass has a strong caramel like scent and because of this it used to be spread around the entrances to churches. Today, Sweetgrass is still used in Russia and Poland to add taste to some Vodka's. Indians in North America used the plant as mosquito repellent. When dried and woven together Sweetgrass can be used as a very sweet-smelling incense. Sweetgrass likes a sunny to part shady spot in normal to moist soil. Because of its spreading habit, Sweetgrass is best planted in a meadow or install a root barrier.
