Teasel

Teasel  (Dipsacus)

Teasel (Dipsacus) is a genus of bi-annual and short living perennials with a typical flower and prickly leaves. The leaves of some species of Teasel form a cup-shape around the stem. Water forms a small pool in these cups which them prevents ants climbing up to the flowers. Teasel self-seeds well in the garden and it is nice to always have a few spreads around. Bees are regular visitors in the summer and in winter birds will be checking if any seeds are left over. Teasel looks good in a wild garden where it is allowed to self-seed freely. The spent flowers of Teasel used to be used to 'tease' wool. Teasing wool creates a soft, clean, almost furry texture on one side of the cloth.
