Valerian

Valerian  (Valeriana)

Valerian (Valeriana) belongs to a genus of about 150 species of perennials, herbs and half shrubs. They originate mainly from the forests of Europe. Valerian is fully hardy and likes a spot in the sun in virtually any soil as long as this is moist. Valerian has been attributed with several medical properties. Well known are the calming properties. Cats also love Valerian and in the past it was also used as bait for catching rats. Good partners for Valerian are Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum) and Meadowsweet (Filipendula).
