Winter Daffodil

Winter Daffodil  (Sternbergia)

Winter Daffodil (Sternbergia) is a genus of bulbous perennials which mainly grows in countries along the Mediterranean. Most species of Winter Daffodil flower in autumn and only a few in spring. For planting in the garden, it is Sternbergia lutea which is best. This species flowers in Autumn and is being grown now for centuries in our part of Europe. If in the right spot, they will spread quite well. Winter Daffodil wants a spot in the sun with good drainage. Mixing some grit or gravel in the soil helps. They do not like an acidic soil. After flowering, the foliage stays green over winter. In spring, Winter Daffodil goes into its summer rest only to re-appear again in autumn. Make sure that even in summer the plant spot receives sunlight, even though the plant has died back above ground.
