General information about Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla):
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla) is a good and trusted ground cover and edge plant. Cut it back strongly after flowering so it doesn't seed but produces fresh new foliage. Because Lady's Mantle has a calm and quite neutral colour, it can be combined with pretty much anything. A beautiful combination is Lady's Mantle and blue Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) as an under growth for pink roses. The foliage of Lady's Mantle mollis is covered in very fine hairs. Dew and rain drops lie on these like little diamonds.

General information about Pampas Grass (Cortaderia):
Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) is a clump forming, usually tall ornamental grass for in an open spot in the full sun in good soil. Pampas Grass has beautiful tall flower plumes and grey-green foliage with rough sharp edges. The first few years after planting it is advised to cover Pampas Grass with straw in winter, as it is not yet fully hardy. Also too much water in winter can be deadly. A good practice is to tie all the foliage up into a sheaf before the winter. This will divert excess water away from the heart of the plant and also protect against frost. Do not cut back the leaves till spring time. To give Pampas Grass a good start, it is recommended to plant Pampas Grass before the summer. Pampas Grass is beautiful as a specimen or in a grass-garden, surrounded by less tall ornamental grasses.

General information about Coral Bells (Heuchera):
Coral Bells (Heuchera) is a genus of bushy plants with nice flowers and a great variety of different coloured foliage. There are varieties of Coral Bells with bright yellow or red leaves. Some varieties even have black leaves. So, there will be a colour to suit any neighbour plant. As foliage plant, Coral Bells combines well with ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Dead Nettle (Lamium) and Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). Also it lends itself well to be planted in a large pot. It looks good, having a few pots together with bright, contrasting colours. Coral Bells wants a bit of shade and humus rich not too dry soil. The soil needs to drain well. Give them a helping of fresh compost in spring. Some varieties of Coral Bells can become a bit woody in time. Dig these up and plant them a bit deeper or tear them into pieces and re-plant the nice young bits. The foliage of Coral Bells can change its colour quite strongly through the seasons.

General information about Hosta (Hosta):
Hosta (Hosta) is a genus of plants mainly planted because of their varied foliage. The flowers of Hosta are white or mauve. The varieties with white flowers often have a nice scent. Most Hosta's do well in (half)shade although some will tolerate more sun as long as the soil is moist. Hosta's are nice plants which over the years will form a nice clump. Do you have a sitting area in the shade? Why not have a collection of Hosta's in pots. Hosta's combine well with other shade loving foliage plants such as ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Dead Nettle (Lamium). The only disadvantage of Hosta's is that slugs and snails also love them! They will devour them within no time, especially those with softer leaves. The varieties of Hosta with thick grey leaves are least attractive to them. Spread Eco friendly slug pellets around the plants early in spring.

General information about Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia):
Red Hot Pokers (Kniphofia) are stately perennials of which some are ever green. Red Hot Poker flowers with pokers of numerous small tube-like flowers in shades of yellow, orange and red. There are also some new white and two-tone cultivars. If you remover the pokers when they have finished flowering, the plant will through up some more. Red Hot Poker needs a sunny spot in good soil. They hate wet feet in the winter so ensure decent drainage. Although Red Hot Poker is hardy, it is still good to give them some protection from hard frost. This is especially important with new, young plants. Good plant partners for Red Hot Pokers are Fountain Grass (Pennisetum), Catmint (Nepeta) and Coneflower (Rudbeckia).

General information about Oregano (Origanum):
Oregano (Origanum) is an herb-like plant for in the full sun in normal to moist, well-draining soil. Oregano we know best for its use in the kitchen, but some species are being grown because of their foliage or flowers. For use in the kitchen, Wild Oregano is best. In the right conditions, Oregano can spread vigorously by means of rhizomes or self-seeding. The species 'rotundifolium' has flowers that look like a hop-bell or shrimp. These species can be a bit less hardy. Use these in the rockery or in a pot on the patio where the bells will hang nicely over the edge of the pot. Oregano attracts lots of insects and butterflies and is perfect for a butterfly garden. Good partners for Oregano are other drought lovers, such as Stonecrop (Sedum), Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina), St. John's Wort (Hypericum), Cinquefoil (Potentilla) and Lavender (Lavandula).

General information about Fountain Grass (Pennisetum):
Fountain Grass (Pennisetum) is a genus of ornamental grasses that was one of the first to be introduced into the garden. The bristly plumes of Fountain Grass are attractive, both in the garden but also when used in flower arranging. Fountain Grass prefers a spot in the sun and in fertile well-draining soil. If in a less sunny spot, the plant will grow, but flower less. Within the genus Fountain Grass we have miniatures and giants, one for every garden! The grasses of the species 'alopecuroides' are the hardiest ones. Why not plant some groups of 3 plants in the border, surrounded by plants that only grow to half the grass's height. Good neighbour plants for Fountain Grass are Stonecrop (Sedum), Aster (Aster), Obedient Plant (Physostegia), Cranesbill (Geranium) and Bee Blossom (Gaura). Also, in the modern garden, Fountain Grass is brilliant when surrounded by New Zealand Bur (Acaena) or gravel. If after time the plant starts flowering less, it is possibly time to dig the Fountain Grass up and split the clump up.

In the right location, Parsley will often self-seed. In the past, Parsley was used in medicine and often played a role in folklore and superstition. Now, we only really know Parsley as an unmissable herb in the kitchen. The varieties with smooth leaves are often used in the dishes itself and the frilly leaved ones are usually cut up fine and added as flavour enhancer. Parsley should be in every herb garden. Ensure the plant gets enough moisture and feed.

General information about Beardtongue (Penstemon):
Beardtongue (Penstemon) is a genus of perennials with unusual flowers. A very large range of cultivars have been grown with a wide range of colours. Unfortunately, a lot of these cultivars are not fully hardy with us, and this is mainly that our winters can be too wet for them. Beardtongue needs a well-draining soil in the full sunshine. The species Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) tends to be the hardiest with us. Beardtongue flowers for a long period, but it is best to remove any flowering stems in mid-September so that the plant can put its energy into producing new shoots. Try combining Beardtongue with Yarrow (Achillea), Coneflower (Echinacea), Pincushion Flower (Scabiosa) or Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa).

General information about Masterwort (Peucedanum) (Peucedanum):
Masterwort (Peucedanum) is a genus of umbel forming perennials. They like a normal to moist spot in slight alkaline, fertile soil. Shade is tolerated quite well by Masterwort and this does enhance the flowers. If Masterwort self-seeds too much, cut away the flower stem when they have gone over. This will also help future growth of the plant. It may take a few years for Masterwort to establish properly. They attract a lot of insects and look good in the border or in a natural garden. Good neighbours for Masterwort are Monkshood (Aconitum) and Cranesbill (Geranium).

General information about Canary Grass (Phalaris):
Canary Grass (Phalaris) is a genus of grasses with reed like leaves. The foliage sometimes is used to make Ayahuasca, a psychedelic thee. Canary Grass will grow in most soils, as long as not too dry. The plant likes sun to half shade. If happy, Canary Grass can sometimes spread too much and become invasive. A root barrier will prevent this. If the leaves go brown, for instance after a period if drought, just cut Canary Grass plant right back. It will soon form new leaves again. In a natural planting, Canary Grass looks good combined with Loosestrife (Lysimachia) and Knotweed (Persicaria).

General information about Cordgrass (Spartina):
Cordgrass (Spartina) is a nice hanging grass. The plant wants a spot in the sun and fertile, moist soil. If the soil is less moist, the plant will not grow to its full potential. The very nice leaves are very useful in flower arranging, especially the variegated ones. Cordgrass colours to a bright yellow in autumn. The plants spread by underground rhizomes and therefore is less suited for a smaller garden, unless you use a root barrier of plant it in a pot. Cordgrass looks good near a natural pond, planted near Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium), Goat's Beard (Aruncus) or Leopard Plant (Ligularia).

General information about Piggyback Plant (Tolmiea):
Piggyback Plant (Tolmiea) is a genus of plants from North America with only one species, Tolmiea menziesii. Within this species, some cultivars have been grown with differing foliage colours. We mainly know Piggyback Plant as a house plant, but in our climate, mostly it is hardy enough to grow in the garden. Characteristic of Piggyback Plant is that young plants grow in the spot where the leaf meets the leaf stem. These children can then be planted out on their own. Apart from that, Piggyback Plant also produces runners and can form a nice mat. Piggyback Plant prefers a spot in the (half)shade in humus rich soil which may be slightly acidic. Piggyback Plant is very much suited as a woodland plant, and looks nice when planted together with ferns.

General information about Adam's Needle (Yucca):
Adam's Needle (Yucca) is grown for its sword like leaves and enormous flowers. Some varieties have nice striped variegated leaves. Use Adam's Needle as a specimen or plant in small groups. They also look good in a pot in the modern garden with gravel. It may take a few years before Adam's Needle will flower. Once established, most Adam's Needle will survive our winters. We would cover them with a fleece for the first few years in frosty weather. Adam's Needle wants a place in the full sun in normal to reasonably dry soil, ideally with some lime. Ensure good drainage. If you wish to plant around your Adam's Needle, consider Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina), New Zealand Bur (Acaena) or Mouse Ear (Cerastium).
