Yellow Waxbells

Yellow Waxbells  (Kirengeshoma)

Of the genus Yellow Waxbells (Kirengeshoma) only two species are suited to the garden. Kirengeshoma palmata from Japan and Kirengeshoma koreana from Korea. There is not a great difference between the two species but the flowers of 'palmata' are somewhat slimmer in shape. They are real shade plants with nice maple like leaves and pale-yellow flowers. Yellow Waxbells prefers a place in the cool shade in normal soil. It will tolerate more sun as long as the soil is moist enough. Yellow Waxbells needs a fertile soil so adding some compost annually is good. Yellow Waxbells is a must in the shady garden, together with ferns, Baneberry (Actaea), Japanese Anemone (Anemone), Monkshood (Aconitum) and White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus).
