General information about Yarrow (Achillea):
Yarrows (Achillea) are low to high perennials for a sunny position on normal to poor soil. The foliage is feathery and the plant has a shield of small flower heads. The flowers lend themselves well for drying. It looks best when Yarrow is planted in large groups. Deadhead after flowering to prevent seed forming. This will stimulate new growth and prevent seedlings growing in the centres of the plants. These will often not be the same colour as the mother plants. Good neighbours for Yarrow are for example Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Helen's Flower (Helenium), Stonecrop (Sedum) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Hollyhock (Alcea):
Most Hollyhock (Alcea) are bi-annual. They are tall, stately plants in beautiful colours. Hollyhock looks best against a fence or wall. There are now some new perennial species available which are less prone to rust on their leaves. Something that will not kill Hollyhock, but doesn't look nice. Usually these affected plants are in too moist a position. There is still some debate over the proper naming of the bi- and perennials. In our web shop we have put the perennials under the genus Mallow (Malva).

Chamomile (Anthemis) is a perennial which produces a profusion of daisy like flowers. Apart from the usual yellow flowers, new varieties are now available in white and cream. Chamomile likes a position in the full sun in a well-draining, not too fertile soil. Too much fertilizer and the plant grows limp and lanky. Chamomile is a good cut flower and in the past the flowers were used in dyeing wools. Cutting back in the end of August promotes good root growth and ensures nice strong plants in next year. Chamomile combine well with Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa), Yarrow (Achillea) and Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia).

General information about Columbine (Aquilegia):
Columbines (Aquilegia) are clump forming plants for in a humus rich soil in the half-shade to full sun. Most species are shades of blue but also available are red, white and yellow. Columbine happily self-seeds, which is a good thing as the plants usually only lives for a few years. The flowers of the seedling are often a different colour than that of the parent. Let yourself be surprised! If you do not want this, cut away the flower stems straight after flowering. This will also help the plant live longer. As the foliage of Columbine, after flowering, often does not look good anymore, a good idea is to plant it amongst other plants, such as Cranesbill (Geranium), Coral Bells (Heuchera), Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Bellflower (Campanula).

General information about Small Reed (Calamagrostis):
Small Reed (Calamagrostis) is a group of upright tall grasses which flower in summer. After that the clumps turn golden brown and stay attractive into the winter. Small Reed likes a spot in the sun, in dry to normal, not too fertile soil. Not enough sun or too much fertilizer will make for weak, arching plants. Small Reed looks great planted as a solitary plant. Why not plant a group of 3 or 5 plants in the flower border to create a vertical accent next to Beebalm (Monarda), Coneflower (Echinacea), Aster (Aster), Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and Goldenrod (Solidago).

Chrysanthemums are available in a variety of colours and shapes, singles, doubles or pom-pom. Because they flower late in the season, they are very useful in the border, in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in a well-draining soil. If you do plant Chrysanthemum in late summer, best to cover the plants with a layer of straw or leaves in winter. General information about Tickseed (Coreopsis):
Tickseed (Coreopsis) is a genus of beautiful flowering plants for a not too fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. Tickseed is a must in a colourful flower border but also good to use in planters combined with annuals. There are lots of new varieties being introduced right now of which hardiness and longevity are not known yet. Tickseed from the groups 'lanceolata' and 'grandiflora' are short lived. You can prolong their life by cutting back the plants in late summer down to 5-10 cm above soil level. A shame if they still have flowers, but now they will put their energy into producing new shoots for spring. The most reliable Tickseed are those from the group 'verticillata'. Do not let the above put you off using Tickseed in the garden. They are not expensive and the shorter living varieties will reward you with an abundance of flowers. Tickseed looks good planted next to blue Giant Hyssop (Agastache) and not too tall Fountain Grass (Pennisetum).

General information about Montbretia (Crocosmia):
Montbretia (Crocosmia)'s are plants with corms, upright, lance shaped leaves and flowers in varying, bright colours. Montbretia is a 'must have' in the border, great combined with Helen's Flower (Helenium), Giant Hyssop (Agastache), Coneflower (Rudbeckia) and ornamental grasses. Montbretia is also a good cut flower. Plant in the sun in a well-draining, normal soil. If too wet, especially in winter, the corms of Montbretia will rot away. Plant the corms quite deep, the bottom of them at 15-20 cm. This will help the hardiness as when planted too shallow they can frost. Also covering with a layer of leaves in winter will safeguard them. If you have a wet garden it is advisable to dig the corms of Montbretia up in late autumn and re-plant in spring.

They often self-seed but then usually do not come true to colour. Foxglove is very good for in the wild garden. They like some lime in the soil and do not want wet feet in the winter. The species 'purpurea' is bi-annual and will die after flowering. The species of Foxglove with yellow/brown flowers will usually live for 3 years. Cutting well back after flowering will stimulate the forming of new shoots and prolong the plants life. Foxglove was used to treat irregular heart beat in humans. Using this medical property wrongly can be fatal.

Even when the flowers have gone over, they are still attractive for a long time. Coneflowers wish a spot in the sun in dry to normal fertile soil. Half shade will do but you will not get quite as many flowers. The last few years has seen a lot of new cultivars of Coneflower come to the market, some of which are unfortunately not proving to be fully hardy. Please do not let this stop you enjoying these Coneflowers. Ensure that your young plants do not have too much competition from neighbouring plants as they need space to fully develop. Coneflower is a good plant for in the border, but also a must in the prairie garden. They combine well with lots of plants. Coneflower is in medicine also known for its resistance improving qualities.

General information about Barrenwort (Epimedium):
Barrenwort (Epimedium) is a genus of strong perennials for in the (half)shade. In spring, the flowers float like fairies above the foliage. To see this properly you can cut away the old leaves before the new flower stems appear. Barrenwort is also nice to keep just for its foliage. Some species have bronze to red colours, others have nicely coloured foliage throughout the winter. Barrenwort is quite drought tolerant and is a good ground cover. The best ones for covering a dry area are Epimedium perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' and Epimedium rubrum. Barrenwort combine well with low growing ferns, Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Lungwort (Pulmonaria).

General information about Spurge (Euphorbia):
Spurge (Euphorbia) is one of the larges geneses on earth. It includes hardy, tropical, deciduous, etc. The deciduous species we have in Europe are fully hardy. This cannot be said for the evergreen species. They need a warm and sunny spot. Spurge has milky sap. Some people might be allergic to this, so be careful. Sometimes this milky sap is used against warts. There will be a kind of Spurge suitable for every single garden. Most species of Spurge will do ok in half shade. Use neighbour plants with blue flowers, this looks good against the green/yellow flowers of Spurge.

Make sure that they are not too wet in the winter. In September cut the plant right back to ground level. It will then form new shoots and you prolong the life of these beautiful plants.
