Zingiber is the supplier of Ginger, one of the most used spices in the world. But Zingiber is also interesting because of its flowers. These appear in late summer, just above the ground, although the plant itself may be a meter tall by then. The flowers of Zingiber can be used in salads and in stir-fry dishes. Zingiber likes a spot in the sun but avoid strong midday rays. The soil should be fertile and normally moist. In order to prevent the tubers rotting good drainage is essential. You could always plant Zingiber in a raised bed.
