Horse Gentain (Triosteum) is a quite unknown genus of woodland plants. The flowers of Horse Gentain are quite insignificant, especially when compared to the following berries. These berries used to be dried and roasted and used as a substitute for coffee. Horse Gentain is a strong plant which enjoys a spot in the half shade to shade. Try planting Horse Gentain amongst the trees, accompanied by other woodland plants such as Lily of the Valley (Convallaria), Monkshood (Aconitum), Bleeding Heart (Dicentra) and Toad Lily (Tricyrtis). Ferns also look good next to Horse Gentain.
