General information about Bugle (Ajuga):
Bugle (Ajuga) is a carpeting evergreen perennial for in the sun or half shade. If in the sun, Bugle needs enough moisture. Bugle spreads with above ground creeping shoots and forms a nice carpet. If, after several years, you get some 'bold' patches, clear these patches and re-plant with some fresh new shoots. A great display is when you combine Bugle with blue flowers and dark foliage with orange Avens (Geum) and light blue or white Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). This combination still looks good after flowering with its contrasting foliage.

They are definitely not choosy plants. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. After a few years' gaps might appear in your clumps. Digging them up and splitting the plants will cure this. They love some added compost in spring. Elephant's Ears look best when planted in larger groups and can be used for covering larger areas. Good partners for Elephant's Ears are Cranesbill (Geranium) and ornamental grasses.

General information about Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera):
Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) are perennials with large rough leaves. The last few years has seen a lot of new variegated forms come to market. Great Forget-me-not flowers with pretty blue or white flowers in spring and prefers a position in half-or full shade in humus rich normal soil. It will tolerate sun as long as the soil is moist enough. The varieties with grey in their foliage withstand more sun than the creamy white ones. Great Forget-me-not is a strong plant and very suitable as a ground cover. The only maintenance needed is removing the dead foliage in spring. At the same time give them a hand full of compost. Good neighbouring plants for Great Forget-me-not are Barren Strawberry (Waldsteinia), Sedge (Carex), Hellebore (Helleborus) and White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus).

General information about Barrenwort (Epimedium):
Barrenwort (Epimedium) is a genus of strong perennials for in the (half)shade. In spring, the flowers float like fairies above the foliage. To see this properly you can cut away the old leaves before the new flower stems appear. Barrenwort is also nice to keep just for its foliage. Some species have bronze to red colours, others have nicely coloured foliage throughout the winter. Barrenwort is quite drought tolerant and is a good ground cover. The best ones for covering a dry area are Epimedium perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' and Epimedium rubrum. Barrenwort combine well with low growing ferns, Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Lungwort (Pulmonaria).

There is a Cranesbill (Geranium) in just about any colour and size for anywhere in the garden. Cranesbills for in the sun or shade and for moist or dry soil. The somewhat larger varieties are good for in the border. They tend to flower for a long period and grow fast and bushy. Cranesbills are well suited to fill in the gaps where the spring flowering bulbs were. Also in the natural garden Cranesbill is great combined with ornamental grasses, Beebalm (Monarda) and Coneflower (Echinacea). The low growing varieties are ideal when used along paths and in the rockery. If Cranesbill become a bit messy after flowering, cut them well back and give a little feed. Some varieties even have black leaves. So, there will be a colour to suit any neighbour plant. As foliage plant, Coral Bells combines well with ferns, Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Bugle (Ajuga), Dead Nettle (Lamium) and Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera). Also it lends itself well to be planted in a large pot. It looks good, having a few pots together with bright, contrasting colours. Coral Bells wants a bit of shade and humus rich not too dry soil. The soil needs to drain well. Give them a helping of fresh compost in spring. Some varieties of Coral Bells can become a bit woody in time. Dig these up and plant them a bit deeper or tear them into pieces and re-plant the nice young bits. The foliage of Coral Bells can change its colour quite strongly through the seasons.

The first of these flowers less nicely but can be used to cover large areas in difficult places. Of the clump forming species of Lilyturf, the cultivars 'Moneymaker' and 'Ingwersen' are the strongest and most reliable flowering ones.

General information about Self Heal (Prunella):
Self Heal (Prunella) is a low, ground covering perennial for in the sun or half shade. Self Heal will pretty much grow anywhere, especially if the soil contains some lime. Once established, Self Heal will tolerate spell of drought quite well. If it starts self-seeding too much, just cut out the flower stems after they have finished flowering. This will also stimulate a second flowering. Self Heal is attractive to many insects. When the flowers have finished flowering, they somewhat resemble woven bee hives. Self Heal is good for in the natural garden, together with Blue Green Sedge (Carex flacca).

If you do not wish them to spread too much, just install a root barrier. Comfrey likes a spot in the half shade and moist soil, but really is not fussy at all. If in the full sunshine the plant will need more moisture. If you want to (re)move Comfrey, make sure you remove all the bits of the roots as they will just grow again. If the foliage get a bit ugly through the summer, just cut the plant well back. Add a hand full of compost, water, and the plant will soon shoot again. Comfrey look best in a natural planting or alongside a pond or forest edge. Plant Comfrey next to strong plants such as Leopard Plant (Ligularia), Baneberry (Actaea), White Wood Aster (Aster divaricatus) and Goat's Beard (Aruncus).

The plant forms small off-shoots and will form a nice mat. Foam Flower is good for planting at the base of shrubs. Also in the front line of the border, Foam Flower is a good plant and combines nicely there with Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera), Dusky Cranesbill (Geranium phaeum) and small ferns.

General information about Foam Flower (Tiarella):
Foam Flower (Tiarella) is a genus of low growing plants which are ideal as ground covers. The mostly white or pink flowers stand like candles above the foliage. Sometimes the plants might flower for months on end. Over the last few years a lot of new cultivars have come to market which still have to prove themselves. Many of these new varieties have lovely marked leaves that colour nice in autumn. Foam Flower likes a spot in (half)shade in a loose, humus rich soil which is not too dry. General information about Early-flowering Borage (Trachystemon):
Early-flowering Borage (Trachystemon) is a plant with rough leaves and nice flowers which unfortunately are not very noticeable. Early-flowering Borage will grow just about anywhere, and once established it will accept quite dry soil. It is a good ground cover for in difficult locations. They do like a hand full of compost in spring. If, after a prolonged drought, the foliage of Early-flowering Borage does not look its best anymore, just cut it away. Within no time the plant will through up nice fresh shoots again. If you are covering a large area with Early-flowering Borage, the odd large fern Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia) in between, looks great.

Moisture requirement : Normal
Winter hardiness     : Till -18°C  (USDA Zone 7)

General information about Periwinkle (Vinca):
Periwinkle (Vinca) is a genus of ever green ground covers. They will grow anywhere and form a very 'neat' covering of the soil. Apart from the well-known green leaved / blue flowered species there are now also ones with frilly or variegated leaves and white or purple/red flowers. Periwinkle prefers a spot in normal soil and half shade. More sun is ok as long as the soil is moist enough. Also in the full shade Periwinkle will grow but flower less. You can cut away all the leaves in spring, which shows the flowers better and also re-juninates the plant. Especially Lesser Periwinkle is ideal to use under shrubs, trees and other difficult places such as mounds. Once filled out properly, Periwinkle forms a nice, maintenance free dense ground cover which also suppresses weeds very well.

General information about Pansy (Viola):
Pansy (Viola) has been grown for centuries for its pretty flowers, which even scent lovely in a few species. There are species of Pansy which only last for one season, think the large headed winter pansies, which are sold in masses every autumn. There are also other species of Pansy which with some care will last for years, such as Horned Violet (Viola cornuta) and Sweet Violet (Viola odorata). The flowers of these species are smaller than the afore mentioned winter pansies, but therefore more in balance with the green of the plant and also better resistant against poor weather. Cut Pansy back a bit if they get a bit straggly and spoil them with some fertilizer. Taking out the seed pods will prolong the flowering season. The plant will also remain stronger. Pretty much all Pansy do well in half shade in normal soil.

Barren Strawberry (Waldsteinia) belongs to a genus of semi ever green ground covers. They are strong plants well suited to cover large, difficult areas. Barren Strawberry prefers a place in half shade in normal soil, but less favourable locations are also tolerated, such as under shrubs and trees. You can, if you so wish, cut away the old leaves early in spring to give the plant a whole fresh look. Once established and grown out, Barren Strawberry forms a dense, low maintenance ground cover which also suppresses weeds well. Nice partner plants for Barren Strawberry are Rock Cranesbill (Geranium macrorrhizum), Great Forget-me-not (Brunnera) and Lily of the Valley (Convallaria).
