Tragopogon - Goatsbeard

Tragopogon is somewhat similar to Taraxacum (Dandelion), but is larger in all. Another typical feature of Tragopogon is that the flowers wilt during the afternoon; they bloom only in the morning. The roots of Tragopogon can be eaten like salsify. Many species of Tragopogon are biennial; a rosette forms in the first year and they flower in the second year, after which they die off. Fortunately, they propagate well so you will usually find Tragopogon somewhere in your garden. Tragopogon fits well in a natural planting in full sun on normal soil. The plants are loved by bees.
